United Way of the Florida Keys (UWFK) announced today that its board of directors has approved a change to its formal mission statement.

UWFK’s mission now affirms: “United Way of the Florida Keys, the leader in community caring, advocates for increased social consciousness while actively fighting for strong working families through access to nutritious food, child development and safety net services.”

Almost 50% of our Florida Keys community is one step away from homelessness and despair. United Way of the Florida Keys works to increase access to nutritious food, education, child development and safety net services for these most vulnerable members of our community.

Since 1981, UWFK has worked with a wide variety of nonprofit partners throughout Monroe County. This year, they will increase their direct community investment impact by over $30,000, bringing their grants distribution total to nearly $200,000. Along with this dramatic increase in grants, they are also working with partners to find new ways of helping working families in the Keys. These new direct service programs provide free tax preparation services, free books to build home libraries for young children, preschool scholarships for working families, financial literacy classes for the public, and much more!

Richard Tamborrino, chair of UWFK’s marketing committee, stated: “Given the increasing needs in Monroe County among the financially insecure, we feel our new mission statement accurately conveys the primary goals and the overarching efforts United Way of the Florida Keys will advocate for in the near future.”

The UWFK board of directors approved this mission statement as part of a new set of strategic goals that will guide the organization’s work.
