May Sands Montessori student Isabela Barr holds out a handcrafted lampshade created by she and fellow classmates for the live auction component of her school’s annual gala, while her mother and gala organizer Layla Barr entices the crowd for their bids. The “Great Gala- Bal Masque” held January 20 brought together more than one hundred revelers- a mix of the school’s parents and community members- who enjoyed an evening of dancing, dining, and a silent and live auction of items generously donated by many local businesses and artisans.

The event helped raise nearly $30,000, monies that will help support the school’s authentic Montessori programming, classroom guide staffing, and arts-based enrichment programs. May Sands Montessori is a free, lottery-based public school of choice that is open to all children and strives to reflect the diversity of our community while guiding students in the development of curiosity, self-motivation and respect. For more information or to schedule a time to observe the Montessori model at work in the classrooms, contact Principal Lynn Barras at 305. 293.1400 x 53418 or visit keywestmontessori.com.
