Connie Gilbert, 1939-2016

The Key West Chapter of the National Organization for Women will award the first annual Connie Gilbert Memorial Scholarship on May 15, 2018.  The $2,000 scholarship will go to a Monroe County applicant who identifies as a woman, and who wishes to complete her education, including professional certifications, training classes, or classes and required materials for higher educational degrees.

Deadline for application, which may be found at, is April 15, 2018.  One can also request a scholarship application by emailing

The funds were raised by NOW at a February celebration of Connie Gilbert’s life, featuring raffles, drawings, silent auctions and an orchid auction.  Gilbert founded the local NOW chapter and is remembered by the Keys community for her commitment to the fight for social justice, patronage of the arts, and performance in local theatrical productions.  She was also an accomplished writer, publishing many works of fiction, poetry and journalism.
