The City Commission this week honored this country’s heroes with a proclamation in honor of the upcoming Veteran’s Day.

Members of the Living Memorial Committee accepted the proclamation from Mayor Craig Cates and Commissioner Sam Kaufman.

“The citizens of the City of Key West will join together again this year to pay tribute on this day to the dedicated veterans who have served this great nation with such distinction, both in peace time and in war,” reads the proclamation. “In honor of these dedicated men and women, we pledge our continued defense of our nation so that their sacrifice will stand before the entire world as a tribute to the spirit and determination of a people dedicated to the principles of freedom and democracy.”

Jerry Hughes, a member of the Vietnam Living Memorial Committee, encouraged the commission and the community to join in this national day of honor by attending the dedication of the new memorial in Bayview Park at 11 a.m. on November 11th.

“This is a one of a kind memorial in the country,” said Hughes. “You’re going to be very proud of it.”

The Veteran’s Day Parade, sponsored this year by the U.S. Coast Guard, will follow a somewhat different path than in past years. It will begin at 4 p.m. at the corner of Eaton and Duval streets. It will travel up Duval to Truman, then proceed to Bayview Park where the memorial committee is hosting a celebration.
