Varela Announces Candidacy for City Commission

Long-time resident Fredy Varela, Sr. is proud to announce that he is officially entering the race for the Key West City Commission District 4 seat. Varela is a local family man, former restaurant owner and retired food sales representative, who has served his community in different capacities throughout his life.

“Through my years of involvement, I’ve gained a lot of insight into city issues and have the organizational skills to unite our city to move forward. I feel that these skills qualify me, but the main reason I’m running is because I love this city https://thebluepaper.com///wp-admin/post-new.phpand I want to serve it on a higher level. I’m a unifier, and that kind of leadership would complement our commission right now.”

Varela is a past president of the Key West Jaycees, a member of the Elks Club, served on the City Civil Service Board and also on the City Code Enforcement Board. He was appointed by then Mayor Wardlow to chair the City Manager Selection Committee. Later he was given the key to the city by then Mayor Richard Hayman for his service on said boards. In addition, he’s coached little league baseball and basketball and remains involved in baseball & softball through his grandkids. He is a co-founder of the 551 Teen Club Reunion, which reunited approximately 1200 former members at a two-day event. Currently he is serving as treasurer of the Key West Vietnam Living Memorial Committee.

“I’m asking the voters to give me a chance to serve in this new capacity, to tackle some of the pressing issues that face our residents every day”.

Varela has three generations of his family residing in Key West including three children and eight grandchildren. “I’m fully vested in this community. My family is here, and we’re not going anywhere. I just want to make our city better and serve the town I so love.”
