Senator Flores Calls for Select Committee to Investigate Water Quality
MIAMI, Fla. – Senator Anitere Flores has called for a Select Committee to be created by the State Legislature to address recent findings of potential contamination to the Biscayne Bay Aquifer.
“This is a potentially serious environmental and health hazard for people across South Dade and the Florida Keys. I want to make sure that the state is doing everything in its power to protect the water supply that is so vital to our state.” said Senator Flores.
Over the past few weeks local officials and citizens across South Florida have expressed their concerns in regards to the Turkey Point nuclear power plant polluting the water in the Biscayne Bay area. The power plant is having a recurring problem with the cooling canals releasing into Biscayne Bay. This area covers 63,000 acres of water from Miami-Dade to Monroe County.
Senator Flores has asked President Andy Gardiner to appoint a Select Committee in order to begin an investigation into this matter. This committee will be made up of a bipartisan group of Senators from across the state, and will begin meeting within the next weeks.
Senator Flores stated, “This is a serious issue, and the Legislature will do all it can to keep the drinking water of South Floridians safe and preserve the delicate environment of the Florida Keys and the Biscayne Bay Aquifer.”
