Monroe County Fire Rescues Responds to Boat Fire and Truck Crash into a Tom Thumb
It was a busy couple of hours last night for Monroe County Fire Rescue in the Lower Keys.
At 9:02 p.m. Wednesday, MCFR was dispatched to a boat fire at Naval Air Station Key West’s Boca Chica Marina. When firefighters arrived, the approximately 35-foot catamaran was fully engulfed.
MCFR firefighters from the Stock Island, Big Coppitt Key and Sugarloaf stations and Battalion Chief 1 assisted the NAS Key West Boca Chica fire department to extinguish the fire. The U.S. Coast Guard assisted with the putting out small flames and hot embers that only could be reached by water.
The owner of the boat was transported to Lower Keys Medical Center for evaluation.
At 10:10 p.m. Wednesday, MCFR was dispatched to a single vehicle accident at the Tom Thumb convenience store on Stock Island. A driver of a truck thought the vehicle was in park, but it was still in drive and rammed into the building and a cage containing 16 20-pound propane tanks. The cage prevented any damage to the propane tanks. The driver declined evaluation by medics.
