February is Free for Keys Locals at Keys History & Discovery Center

Islamorada, FL – For the month of February, locals can learn more about the history of the community during Free February for Locals! at the Keys History & Discovery Center at MM 82 in Islamorada.

“Every local should take time to learn a little bit about their communities history,” said Rich Russell, president of the not-for-profit organization, Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation, which operates the Discovery Center. “We opened two short years ago and have grown and developed so much in a short time. If you haven’t yet visited, or if you visited six months ago, there is much new to see and learn.”

Free February for Locals! is for Monroe County residents and proof of residency is required. The Discovery Center is open Thursdays through Sundays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Annual memberships with a range of benefits are available.

The Discovery Center is a museum, theater and gift shop, offering lessons in Keys history from the First People/Indians, Spanish Treasure Fleets, Pirates and Wreckers, history of fishing in the Keys, as well as stories of Flagler’s Railway, the Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, the ecology of the Keys and scenes of underwater diving. Monthly movie matinees are held the first Wednesday of the month, and Keys History & Discovery Center Presents… offers a monthly lecture series, typically on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation, a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization, operates the Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada, MM 82, on the property of the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost. General admission is $12. Admission for seniors is $10 and children 13-under are free. For more information, call 305-922-2237 or visit our website at www.keysdiscovery.com.
