Children Explore and Interpret their Own Renditions of Art Masterpieces at ArtCamp!

Children proudly display artworks they have painted onto fabric book covers at this week’s Key West Art & Historical Society’s ArtCamp! – Journey through the Mediums: The Study of an Artist –led by instructor Pascale Beregovoi-Davis. The process allowed them to explore the technique of painting on a new surface and how it differed from painting on paper. Held every summer at Fort East Martello’s Imagination Institute, the camp for children aged 5-12 features a themed week with auxiliary activities and excursions that include field trips to local museums, nearby beaches and gardens—all highlighting the abundant history and cultural assets of our islands while encouraging and expanding students in their knowledge of their local community. After learning about different artists and art mediums, campers explore their own interpretations of a selected artist’s work on recycled fabric. The children are part of Journey through the Mediums: The Study of an Artist, this week’s Key West Art & Historical Society’s ArtCamp! led by instructor Pascale Beregovoi-Davis.

“On so many occasions I have heard children (& adults) say “I can’t draw” or “I can’t paint”,” says Beregovoi-Davis, who has studied Art & Design at the renowned St. Martin’s School of Arts and teaches at the Montessori Children’s School in Key West. “I believe art is for everyone, and if just given a chance and an opportunity people are usually surprised to what they are capable of!”

Using his own technique and choice of colors, Hugo Blinkman creates his own rendition of “Ft. St. Jean at Marseilles,” a painting by a lesser-known French Post Impressionist, Paul Signac. Blinkman is a student of Journey through the Mediums: The Study of an Artist, this week’s Key West Art & Historical Society’s ArtCamp! led by instructor Pascale Beregovoi-Davis.
