Monday, Feb. 26, the Key West Friends of the Library will welcome Carol Munder as guest speaker, in conversation with local photographer Mark Hedden. Ms. Munder’s appearance will be at the Key West Theater, 512 Eaton St. Admission is free. Her discussion begins promptly at 6:00 p.m. Seating starts at 5:30 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Carol Munder is a photographer and lithographer who creates hauntingly evocative monochrome images.

Munder rolled into Key West in a Volkswagen Microbus in 1978. Her first job was with the Key West Library, and she spent eight years driving the bookmobile up and down the Keys, taking pictures when she could.

“In meticulous Munder prints, bodies dissolve into nothing, beginning at edges, as dead people do. They blur into silence,” wrote Annie Dillard in the American Scholar.

“I photograph objects I love, from artifacts made thousands of years in the past to twentieth century anonymously carved wooden sculptures found in French flea markets. Over the years my goals have slowly evolved with each body of work. In all, I search for some vital force within,” said Munder.

“Munder’s moments are decisive, but they are organically anachronistic moments that never happened, or happened in an ahistorical era in which cameras couldn’t possibly exist. If they are not primordial, they are at least antediluvian. Her images seem not so much developed and printed as unearthed, maybe banged carefully against a tree to break loose the layers of mud and ash,” wrote Mark Hedden in the Miami Rail.

Munder has exhibited her work in galleries and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad, including the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, FL; the San Diego Art Institute, San Diego, CA and Galerie Univer in Paris, France.  She has received numerous grants and awards and has also been featured in publications including American Scholar and Granta Magazine.

Munder currently divides her time between her homes in Key West and rural France.
