Mud Pi was founded by Jay Gogin to support and expand the ceramics department at FKCC College. It is the oldest and most active FKCC student activities club. It is a group of enthusiastic ceramics students who voluntarily make the plates and bowls which are included in the price of the annual Mud Pi Dinner. The dinner will be held February 28 at the Key West Light House.

Jay Gogin was the anchor and inspiration of the ceramics facility at the college where he was the instructor of the ceramics department for almost 25 years. Unfortunately, he passed away at the young age of 57 in June. His wife Robin who was always at his side, followed Jay and their spirits are forever united.

Jay Gogin first started working in clay in third grade. Jay graduated from USP in 1975 majoring in ceramics and is now world-renowned in his field. What is really amazing is that Jay managed to keep art alive and well while most art and music departments were being downsized. Jay was always expanding and offering new workshops and opportunities from beginner to professional artists. His beautiful murals and fountains, that he voluntarily created, are seen throughout the community .

In Jay’s memory, many dedicated volunteer student members of Mud Pi have made all the beautiful plates and bowls that are yours to take home with the dinner. All the proceeds are used to purchase equipment and supplies. Much of the equipment and supplies need to be updated and replenished to continue and prosper in accordance with Jay’s vision for the Key West community and ceramics department. The price for the dinner is only $28 and that includes the beautiful hand made bowl. This year there will be a pig roast and an abundance of sides as well as many vegetarian dishes.

Tickets now available at KEYSTIX.COM at the college and from your mud-pi representative. To quote FKCC President Jonathan Guevarra:

“The word legend is often overused or misused when we describe certain
individuals. To say that Jay is a legend is no exaggeration. His finest
qualities extend beyond his artistic and creative abilities. Jay’s
kindness, his generosity and his willingness to share and to serve
simply because these were the right things to do will never be
forgotten. Through his artistic expression we will all continue to benefit.
On behalf of the entire FKCC community I say thank you to Jay Gogin for
his almost 25 years of service. I especially want to thank his wife,
Robin, who was equally generous and allowed the rest of us to be a part
of their lives.”

Help us keep the legend and work of Jay and Robin Gogin, join us this Saturday at the Key West Lighthouse for Mud Pi dinner and celebration of the their lives. If you can not attend consider buying a ticket to support the cause. For more information call Janis Stevens 305 393-5079.
