Sheriff Seeks Public’s Help in Solving Decades Old Murder Case

Monroe County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit is asking for the public’s help in solving a decades old Plantation Key murder case.

On November 25, 1985 at 9:22 a.m. Sgt. Rick Neal responded to a home at 120 Orchid Street on Plantation Key. A neighbor called because she’d found a woman duct taped and handcuffed at the residence. The woman, who was uninjured, was the ex-wife of the occupant of the house, who was found murdered inside.

The dead man was identified as 48 year old Tomas Gonzalez. He died of a gunshot wound to the head.

The ex-wife told detectives she came to the house to check on him and three men grabbed her, duct taped a towel over her head and handcuffed her. She was unable to identify any of the men.

Detective Larry Ruby was assigned to investigate. He and other detectives followed many leads in the Keys and in Miami, but no one was ever arrested.
