Fitch Honored by State as Crossing Guard of the Year
Key West children and their grateful parents filled the commission chamber last night to witness the commendation of one of the City’s favorite guardians of public safety. Martha Fitch, a Key West crossing guard for over four decades, was named the Florida School Crossing Guard of the Year by the Florida Department of Transportation.
Fitch has been in Key West since 1955. After retiring after serving over 25 years with the County Clerk, she started work as a crossing guard in 2000. The crossing guard program was part of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office until 2010, when it was moved to the City of Key West. Fitch has been ensuring the safety of Key West kids for over 16 years. She can be seen every school day at the May Sands Montessori School on United Street.
Fitch is one of just three crossing guards statewide to receive the honor.
NASCAR driver Scott Lagasse Jr., spokesman for the FDOT’s Alert Today program, presented her with the state commendation. The FDOT award recognized Fitch for her commitment to safety among students, parents and motorists.
In addition, Key West Mayor Craig Cates presented her with a City commendation.
“She is a model guard, dedicated and dependable and exhibits professionalism in every aspect of her job,” reads the commendation.
