One Island Family/The Southernmost Unitarian Universalist Congregation is sailing into summer with a series of relaxed roundtable discussions and presentations on a wide variety of topics each Sunday at 11 a.m. into September. Anyone interested in liberal — both humanistic and theistic — religion is warmly invited to attend.

“The focus is relaxation, fun, socializing, getting to know each other better,” said congregation President Jim Smith. A recent discussion looked at geneology and the June 19 topic is to be Chinese gardens, both ordinary and Imperial, presented by member Sanling Ran. There may be a theme, but the 17 Sundays from June 5 through September 25 are proposed as free-flowing, friendly conversations. Refreshments are served.

Other possibilities, Smith said, are discussions of the richly varied “Great Courses” on Western Civilization.  “We already have the catalogue and the disk,” Smith said. There are also the TED Talks on any of hundreds of subjects, interesting, educational, impressive.  These are new and different ways of thinking about things. Google it,” he advised the recent gathering. He also asked is anyone remembered the “This I Believe” personal statements from the old NPR program in the 1950s led by Edward R. Murrow.  “What are yours?” he asked.

Still other possibilities included off-site opportunities for water ventures, picnics and other fun events. Anyone who shows up on Sunday mornings is welcome to express a preference, the gathering agreed. Topics are penciled in through July 10.

The congregation’s respected Religious Education program will resume in the fall with a new director, who is being sought, Smith said. Ongoing are the monthly teen Movie Nights hosted by adult member Pam Flowers for the school district’s Gay Straight Alliance. Students from HOB and KWHS are invited to attend on Saturday, June 25 from 6:30 till 9:30 p.m. and enjoy popcorn, a snack, drinks and a movie together at One Island Family. The teens select the movie to see. The combined group will also be doing an Adopt-A-Highway cleanup.

OIF is located at 801 Georgia St. at the corner of Petronia in the Meadows. For additional details please phone (305) 296-4369 or visit oneislandfamily.org or Facebook “One Island Family Official”.
