Continuing their commitment to offer the most talented and accomplished of the new generation of virtuosic chamber music ensembles, The Board of Impromptu Classical Concerts proudly presents New York’s DECODA in concert Sunday, March 22, at 4:00 pm, St. Paul’s Church.
The first ever Affiliate Ensemble of Carnegie Hall, DECODA, in their first Key West performance, will present “a less traditional program that features ours rather unique instrumentation”, notes Alicia Lee, clarinet player and the group’s project leader. “We will be presenting a mix of repertoire starting from as recent as 1993 and stretching back to the Classical era.” The varied program includes work by Beethoven, Strauss, Poulenc, Carter, and Milhaud.
Ms. Lee continues: “In this iteration of DECODA (Alicia Lee, Clarinet; James Austin Smith, Oboe; Seth Baer, Bassoon; Rachel Drehmann, Horn; Marina Radiushina, Piano), we are four wind instruments with piano. With this kind of group, it can challenging to find a great amount of compelling repertoire, but I feel that we’ve put together a program that shows the great range of our instruments. Wind instruments are incredibly versatile and we are lucky that there are many composers that have taken advantage of the possibilities.”

In recent performances, the animated PROJECT Trio enlivened the San Carlos stage with their high energy “rock star” talent anchored by their solid musical foundations in the classical repertoire. Similarly, Classical Jam recently shared their jazz-influenced musical chops in a contemporary work which featured spirited pizzicato punctuated by the slashing of violin bows throughout the air. If Salvatore Dali had been a composer, he may have written such a piece. DECODA, in concert at St. Paul’s on March 22, will continue to provide innovative interpretations of both new and traditional chamber music repertoire.
Concert tickets are $20 at the door one hour before the performance, by calling: 305.745.2283, or online: Keystix.com or classicalconcertskw.com. Subscription passes can be used for all concerts or for multiple guests at one or more concerts. All students free.
