Two Officers Honored for 20 Years of Service
At Wednesday night’s City Commission meeting, Key West Police Chief Donie Lee recognized two department members for reaching the 20-year mark in their careers.
Lt. Kathleen Ream joined the Key West Police Department in 1995. Her interest in law enforcement began in 1991 when she became an auxiliary officer, which inspired her to attend the police academy. She was promoted to sergeant in 1999. In 2003 she was promoted to lieutenant.
During her 20 years of service, she has served as community policing officer, training officer and has led the Bureau of Community Affairs, Professional Standards Division and the Information Services Division. Her most recent assignment is the day shift patrol commander. She is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and SPI.
Sgt. Donny Barrios started with the Key West Police Department in 1992 as an Explorer. After he graduated Key West High School in 1994, he was hired as a dispatcher. Less than a year later, he completed the Law Enforcement Academy at Florida Keys Community College and became a sworn officer.
During his 20 years of service, Sgt. Barrios has worked the department’s recruiter and traffic unit coordinator. He has served on the dive team, the marine unit, and the special response team. He was named Officer of the Year in 2005. He was promoted to sergeant in October of 2014, and currently serves as a night patrol sergeant.
Lt. Read and Sgt. Barrios are family oriented and integral members of our community. Lt. Ream dedicates her time to numerous volunteer efforts including the Toys for Tots, Police Athletic League and the department’s Love Fund. Sgt. Barrios is past president and an ongoing board member of the Police Athletic League, and current vice president for the Love Fund.
