Stock Island Woodworkers/Artists Carve Their Way into the Pages of a Hemingway Novel
Island art collectors take note: on December 15th and 16th from 5pm-8pm and Sunday the 18th from 10am-5pm, a pop-up gallery with a speakeasy feel will open its doors for an exhibit featuring “Old Key West” artists, ranging from the acclaimed late folk artist Mario Sanchez to the wood artist Karen Wray.
In addition to Sanchez are Makiki and Jay Gogin, present-day furniture builders Jimmy Wray and Kris Roehrig, painters Molly Goodwin, Martha Cook and Tobias MacGregor, and metal artist/jeweler Pamela McLeod. Adding to the mix are a collection of locally acquired antiques.
Wray is the newest addition to the show with a new style— interactive BaLANCINg AcT. Random moments in time are captured by way of unusually-shaped scrapes of local exotic hardwoods, polished to a delicious tactile sensation. Similar to the Japanese meditation gardens, Wray has created a BaLANCINg AcT unlike none other.
The venue itself takes you back to old Key West. This place is what songs are made of—a pearl of eccentricities and charm mixed with its salty edge location along the working waterfront filled with sailboats and the shrimping fleet. Located at Safe Harbour Marina on Stock Island, just down the dock from the Hogfish Bar & Grill on Stock Island. Also part of the Lost Kitchen Super Club— look for the red doors.
