March Cemetery Stroll
The last Cemetery Stroll of the 2016 season is planned for Saturday, March 19, 2016. During the stroll, three groups of visitors will be escorted to gravesites where interpreters will tell the stories of the deceased in brief monologues. The groups are scheduled for departures at 9:30, 9:50, and 10:00 a.m. They will depart from inside the Windsor Lane gate on 4th Ave.
Reservations are necessary, and can be made by calling 305-304-1453. A donation of $10 (cash or check) per person to the Historic Florida Keys Foundation is recommended. Retired and active military and students are admitted free upon presentation of identification. Proceeds of the tour are used for cemetery restoration and preservation.
Among the gravesites to be visited are: the Porter family plot, Frederick Weedon’s grave, the Navarro restoration, William Curry’s memorial, Ellen Mallory’s burial site, and the U.S. Battleship Maine Memorial.
The tour will take approximately 90 minutes. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and plan to walk over a mile on uneven ground. Bottled water will be provided.
This is a terrific opportunity to learn first-hand about many of the people who contributed to Key West’s history.
The stroll will only be canceled in the event of steady rain.
This event is sponsored by the City of Key West, and the Historic Florida Keys Foundation.
