23rd Annual Zonta ABC 5K Walk/Run on November 7th
The Zonta Club of Key West will hold its Annual ABC (Awareness Breast Cancer) 5K Walk/Run starting 8:00 AM on Saturday, November 7th at Salute Restaurant on Higgs Beach, with registration beginning at 7:00 AM. The event raises money to cover mammograms, thin-prep pap tests, and other diagnostic and preventive measures in Monroe County, which has some of the highest incidence of breast cancer because so many workers living here have no healthcare coverage.
“The money raised from this event all goes to providing these important preventive services for women who otherwise cannot afford them, so this event literally saves women’s lives here in the Keys. We’ve been able to provide close to 3,000 mammograms to local women over the past 22 years and have never turned any woman in need away,” said Lisa Benfield, President of the Zonta Club of Key West. Women who need services can get them with a Zonta voucher available through the Monroe County Health Department and Womankind.
The 5K race, managed by the Southernmost Runners Club and Theme Runs, awards prizes for the best female and male runners and walkers, and many best-in-age categories. Teams of participants who raise funds with their own race sponsors, also receive awards. Live music adds to the festivities on race day.
“The Parrot Heads in Paradise Meeting of the Minds contribute to our community as major partners with Zonta for this annual event,” says ABC 5K Committee Chair, Penni Wise. Numerous local businesses, professionals and organizations also contribute as sponsors of the ABC 5K Race. New additions this year are a silent auction and 50/50 chance drawing following the race.
Registration is available online at http://www.zontakeywest.com/abc-walk. On-Site Pre-Registration will be held Friday, November 6th from 4:00-6:00 PM at Salute Restaurant.
