Tour Companies and City Spar Over Sightseeing Franchise Agreements

Naja and Arnaud Girard……. As the “Conch Train” slows down at the corner of Eaton and Elizabeth, the conductor blows the whistle. The train’s blaring PA system floods the street: “That’s right folks, you just made it to the top. Key West’s highest point, Solaris Hill! 18 Feet above sea level! That’s where you would want to be in a hurricane!” Resident Bob Sanders says he hears that pitch over and over, all day long. There have been many other complaints about sightseeing busses, trolleys, and [continue reading…]

Leadership Sets Law-Enforcement Standards High

by John Donnelly……. Difficult criminal cases involving marine theft, without any leads, ranging over 112 miles of coastal waterways, adjacent to a crime ridden Miami; might cause a lesser man to relent and look to bury the problem. Not so our Sheriff Rick Ramsay and the gallant men and women of law-enforcement that he consolidated into a ‘task force’, which appears to have smashed and broken a crime wave that has plagued the citizens of Monroe County. The brazenness of these burglaries had been [continue reading…]

Senator Bernie Sanders

by Alex Symington……. In case you didn’t know, there are other candidates besides Hillary Clinton vying for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Recently the heat has been turned up on the Democratic Machine and the DNC Chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to be more inclusive of other Democratic contenders. The Parental Unit of All Invention: Things We Don't Know We Don't Know

by Kim Pederson……. Today (September 16) is National Play-Doh Day. Somehow it slipped my mind, perhaps because this information byte was never there in the first place. This is just further evidence that I am falling further and further behind the times, specifically, The New York Times, which thought NPDD was important enough to include a story about it in today’s Morning Briefing. Play-Doh consists of flour, water, salt, boric acid, and mineral oil. You might already know this if you, like me, thought “doh” [continue reading…]

Roots

by Kirby Congdon……. “Consistency is the hob-goblin of little minds” is about all we get from high-school, if we get that. One reader I know, coming upon the phrase “little minds,” wondered about nineteenth-century New England without cars, telephones, electric lights, television or laptops that provide a grip on experience. Weren’t all minds little then? He also misinterpreted the word “consistency” until he got completely through his education. Consistency was, for him, referring to the small-town comfort of having everything conform to a repetitive life of habit, local chores [continue reading…]

Screwed, Blu'd and Tattooed by Reef Perkins... continued

Screwed, Blu’d and Tattooed by Reef Perkins ***Previous Deeds*** Blu Yunger grew up in Hinckley, Ohio, seasonal home of the Hinckley buzzard. The Hinckley is a cosmopolitan scavenger that every year, for reasons unknown, migrates to Key West to shit upon the tropical paradise at will. Some Hincklanders called the turkey buzzards, “turd smugglers.” Blu was born long and skinny with a hefty Adam’s apple, curly red hair and a third testicle. According to his mom, the attending midwife said the triple was an “O-Man!” [continue reading…]

Open Letter to County Commissioners & County Manager

Greetings County Commissioners & County Manager, May this note find you in the best of health and spirits. The proposed construction of a FKCC building in Key Largo, adjacent to the Jacobs Aquatic Park is not a good idea. It will rob that extensive and well established community of the ethos, charm and residential viability for which the residents purchased their homes. In addition; the peace, quiet and safety of the park will be destroyed by this mammoth construction, parking and traffic nightmare. All [continue reading…]

Residents Organizing Against 199-Foot Communications Tower on Upper Sugarloaf

Dear Editor, Residents of Upper Sugarloaf Key, supported by residents all over Monroe County, are united in opposition to staking a 199 foot tall monopole communications tower in the heart of their residential community. The pole, planned for 830 Crane Blvd on Upper Sugarloaf Key, would be erected by Mr. Robert Holladay from Louisiana who has purchased 8 local radio stations. As existing facilities are quite adequate to provide cellular and radio service to the area there is no need for a 20-story megawatt broadcast [continue reading…]

Situation Grows More Desperate for Haiti/D.R. Refugees

Families who recently fled to Fond Bayard, Haiti, from the Dominican Republic are finding themselves in a desperate situation. Many are living under tents made of tarps after they had to leave the school in which they were taking shelter. With the start of the school year, the families are living in what Food For The Poor-Haiti staff call “heartbreaking conditions.” A site visit late last week revealed that the situation has deteriorated, and the FFP-Haiti staff sent photos with an urgent request to the [continue reading…]
