The City Commission on Tuesday honored Key West High School student Liza Jane Catana for her drive and her talent by naming June 2nd Liza Jane Catana Day.

Catana’s singing is already legendary. The soprano has opened for groups such as Three Dog Night, The Doobie Brothers and Grand Funk Railroad. She has performed with a number of local entertainers and songwriters. She recorded her debut CD “We Can Start a Fire” in Nashville last March, at the age of 15.

Catana volunteers countless hours and shared her amazing talent to benefit many local charities and causes including Hospice/VNA, swearing in ceremonies, Key West Policeman’s Love Fund Ball, the Annual Christmas Concert at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 239th Anniversary of the United Sates Navy, the Wounded Warrior Project, Homes for Veterans, and Veterans’ Memorial.

In addition, she excels academically as a consistently straight-A student. She received the Conch Pride Award from her high school, and is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

Commissioner Tony Yaniz, who sponsored the proclamation, said, “This young lady is going to be a superstar.”

Catana told the packed chambers that she was very grateful for the recognition. “It is really a gift for me to represent this community,” she said.
