Under Florida Statute, the State Attorney of Monroe County has put together a local nominating committee to search for candidates and offer recommendations for the position of District 16 Medical Examiner. The committee has about 14 people, including representatives of County government, law enforcement, the County hospitals, the State Attorney’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office and funeral homes. Dr. Stephen Nelson, chairman of the state’s Medical Examiners Commission, also is on the committee.

The June 8 meeting primarily is for organization purposes. The committee will determine a process to replace Dr. Thomas Beaver, whose three-year term expires on June 30, 2017. Earlier this month, the Medical Examiners Commission unanimously decided not to reappoint Dr. Beaver to another three-year term for District 16, which covers Monroe County.

The nominating committee will reconvene in early July to sort through resumes and decide whom to interview. The committee’s recommendation(s) for medical examiner will be sent to the Medical Examiners Commission. Gov. Rick Scott makes the final appointment.

Due to the process, a permanent new medical examiner likely will not be in place until this fall. The State Attorney has chosen independent Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Steckbauer to serve as interim medical examiner. In the past, Steckbauer has filled in for Dr. Beaver and former District 16 Medical Examiner Hunt Scheuerman while they were on vacation or out of the County.
