Ninety-nine year old philanthropist Ed Knight did the honors this morning, unveiling the plaque renaming the White Street Pier in his honor. The pier will henceforth be known as the Edward B. Knight Pier.

In recognition of nearly a century of service to the citizens of Key West, the City Commission dedicated the landmark “as a reminder of the overwhelming kindness, philanthropic support, and act of generosity bestowed upon the city and citizens of Key West,” reads the plaque.

“The City of Key West acknowledges the lasting contributions of Mr. Knight to our island community,” reads the inscription. “May this landmark serve as a tribute to his selfless efforts and as a token of gratitude for his visionary leadership and commitment to historic preservation, vital to making Key West the thriving and prosperous city it is today.”

Mayor Craig Cates, the entire City Commission, and a who’s who of Key Westers and long time friends of Mr. Knight turned out to show their appreciation.
