Who’s More Water Wise? Marathon or Key West?

Monroe_County_fl_sealThe Wyland Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, April 1- 30, is a community service campaign to see which cities can best inspire their residents to make a series of informative and easy-to-do online pledges to reduce water and energy usage. Locally, Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority is joining in as a neutral party to help all residents conserve water.

To participate, residents of Key West and Marathon can register online via mywaterpledge.com or Facebook, and then make a series of online pledges to conserve water on behalf of their city throughout the month of April. Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category are entered into drawings for hundreds of eco-friendly prizes, including home improvement gift cards, home irrigation equipment, and a Grand Prize Toyota Prius.

“The challenge demonstrates that not only do Marathon residents recognize the need to maintain and restore the ideal water quality for a healthier ecosystem, but that they are also actively engaging in the protection of our water supply and thus working towards a greener and healthier Marathon”, said Mayor Mark Senmartin.

Not a resident of Key West or Marathon? You, too, can still participate and take the pledge. All participants are eligible to win a prize.

The 6th National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is presented by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota. Last year, residents from over 3,900 cities in all 50 U.S. states pledged to reduce their annual consumption of freshwater by 1.5 billion gallons, reduce waste sent to landfills by 47 million pounds, and prevent more than 141,000 pounds of hazardous waste from entering our watersheds.
