The board of directors of Last Stand invites our members, supporters and all interested citizens to a neighborhood information forum, “Hot Topics and Current Issues”, beginning at 6:00 pm on Thursday, November 5th at the Bottle Cap Lounge, 1128 Simonton Street in Key West.

Board members will give brief presentations, followed by questions and comments, on a variety of hot topics, including:

  • Affordable Housing Projects

-What the Monroe County Affordable Housing Committee has been working on
-Last Stand’s position on the referendum questions for acquisition of Peary Court for workforce housing

  • Water Quality

-The status of Last Stand’s challenge to the permit to expand capacity at Key West Resort Utilities on Stock Island

  • Building Height in Key West and Monroe County

-An update on flood elevation impacts to new construction building height in Key West
-Next steps for Monroe County changes increasing allowable building height

  • Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Committee

-What progress has been made in updating the sanctuary management plan
-Next steps and opportunities for public input

The issues the Last Stand board has been monitoring can change from week to week, so it’s possible that we may add another Hot Topic that impacts the environment and quality of life in the Florida Keys.

Last Stand has a membership campaign in progress now for fiscal year 2015-16. You can renew your membership or join Last Stand with a $25 individual membership at this event.

Last Stand’s mission is to promote, preserve and protect the quality of life in the city of Key West, the Florida Keys and their environs, with a particular emphasis on the natural environment. We are holding this information session to provide our members and the general public with a better idea of how we are fulfilling our mission with regard to these topics. The board will also be soliciting opinions and priorities for a potpourri of other topics we have been following on the city, county, state and federal levels.

Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. Cash bar is available. Program begins at 6:15 and ends at 7:30pm.
