Monroe County Sheriff’s Department reports a bicyclist was airlifted to a Miami hospital after a hit and run crash involving a Hummer on Stock Island.

Deputies Lazaro Valdes and Freddy Rodriguez were at Bernstein Park at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday when a citizen told them about the crash between a yellow Hummer and a bicyclist on 5th Street. When they responded, they found the victim, 42 year old Pedro Parrado Marquez of Stock Island, on the side of the road, injured.

Witnesses said they saw a yellow Hummer leave the scene rapidly. They were able to tell deputies who the driver of the Hummer was – 59 year old Eduardo Acevedo of Stock Island. Witnesses said the Hummer also hit a truck and a road sign.

Deputy Valdes found the Hummer parked at 2nd Street and 3rd Avenue. The victim was taken to Lower Keys Hospital and then airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

During the initial investigation, Acevedo told deputies “he had a gun and was going to kill me,” referring to the victim. Major Crimes detectives responded and investigated the possibility that guns threats might be involved and that the crash and injury to the victim might be intentional. After investigation, and consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, evidence was not sufficient to support the allegation.

The case was turned over to FHP.
