Guns

gun

by Alex Symington…….

I don’t know about you, but I am so damned tired of this topic of debate I could spontaneously discorporate and happily enter a different dimension inhabited by the rational and sane, but that isn’t going to happen, is it? So, here I am scratching my head in wonder and amazement at the fresh hell of NRA sponsored, Government sanctioned death from hand-held personal weapons of mass destruction. Representatives of this God forsaken empire of dirt must come up with new and ever more imaginative rationales for the now practically daily mass murder and mayhem caused by people using their “product.”

The NRA’s shop worn mantra, “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” has lost its luster. For God’s sake, “People WITH GUNS kill people.” Can we just be honest about that, at least?! The latest eye-rolling defense of this insanity is a good offense by NRA Executive Vice President for Eternity, Wayne LaPierre. A four and a half minute slick propaganda video of Wayne lecturing Barack Obama on the “real solution” to ending gun death and violence is “in Obama’s hands, but he refuses to act.” Wow, that is some compelling information that can be added to the list of all the other horrors created by Obama. Wayne explains that “thugs, drug dealers and gangbangers” (read young black men) in urban environments are the greatest violent offenders and Obama “knows who and where they are” and all he has to do is round up all these young black men and throw them in jail. Problem solved.

This is some brilliant classic propaganda! This pronouncement paints Obama as weak and ineffectual and at the same time suggests young black people are inherently dangerous and are the “real” threat to Amurca. This twisted simplistic reasoning deflects the cause of gun deaths away from guns and spins it anew into a racial issue which makes the Caucasian gun fetishist base very excited. Really, quite well done.

Yes, Wayne, your “round-‘em-up” strategy would be fine if we lived in Stalinist Russia, but here in the USA we have the rule of law. The constitution was written to protect all of us from this round-‘em-up-and-throw-‘em-in-the-gulag mentality. Wayne seems to have forgotten that the police officers he impugns in his video must adhere to the rule of law, as well. He implies that the police are not doing their job of taking criminals off the streets because there is a conspiracy of collusion between law enforcement and Obama. Wayne (and many other budding fascists) has whittled the ten amendments in the bill of rights down to one. Only the second amendment is sacrosanct and all the others are an annoyance. In essence this video is treasonous by calling into question the USA’s traditions of constitutional rule of law and enthusiastically encourages blatant disregard for those laws.

The video includes Willie Horton stand-in, Darius Brown and his scary mug shot to “prove” Wayne’s argument. This unsophisticated propaganda worked swimmingly for W’s daddy back in 1988 during the heyday of the failed “tough-on-crime” campaign, so there’s no reason it won’t work for Wayne’s NRA. The not-so-subtle bonus spin is Obama, in case it slipped anyone’s mind, is a black guy, too. Credit where credit is due; the video is very well produced, edited and written with wonderfully ominous music overlaid throughout, so if you are a supporter of the NRA and guns this will further convince you of your righteousness and God is on your side and yada yada. If you are like me, you will cringe at the thought that many people will swallow this racist fascist crap, hook, line and sinker.

I am compelled to ask Wayne, “When I see a guy open-carrying an AK-47, how can I tell whether he is a ‘good guy with a gun’ or a ‘terrorist’? Is it by the color of his skin, as you so blatantly and odiously imply? Shameless doesn’t begin to describe you.

I’m not going to list all the atrocities made possible by absurdly easy access to these WMDs, I’m going to let journalist William Rivers Pitt do it for me. (link below) His piece titled, “The Butcher’s Repast” lists forty-two shootings involving four victims or more in only two months. With available information I was able to ascertain the majority of shooters were either, mentally unbalanced mostly white men and one active military and one ex-cop. I did not find any “urban gangbangers,” unless Wayne’s only requirement to be considered one is to be poor and black. In the interest of full disclosure, not all of the shootings have been solved. Having said that, if I was the victim of gun violence, where the bullets hitting my body came from would not be relevant. The bullets hitting my body would be my only concern.

I don’t expect any admission of responsibility on the part of the NRA that guns have anything to do with gun death. In NRA land those two things are separated by a vast sea of denial. I can throw out facts and figures on gun deaths in this country ‘til the cows come home. IT DOES NOT SWAY THE GUN FETISHIST ONE WHIT. I’ll repeat what I say every time I speak about this; if twenty babies being chopped to pieces by semi-automatic weapons in Newtown, CT didn’t inspire some creative legislation to lessen the chance of that massacre happening again, well then, to Hell with us. It’s over and any high moral ground we may have once stood on has turned to quick sand.

  1. I respect the right of anyone to be defenseless and to believe that the world would be a safer place if everyone was. However, aggressors will always be aggressive. If they don’t have a gun, maybe they would use a knife, or maybe they are 7′ tall weighing 350 pounds and are damned hard to stop. If they want to kill a lot of people, they don’t need to fire shots, they can just build a bomb from “common household ingredients”. Passing a law that nobody can carry a gun is like passing a law that nobody can keep an undersized grouper or vote in a district where they do not reside. Not everyone obeys the law, and that’s a fact, everyday, in your neighborhood. The reality is that predators will always have access to a gun or its equivalent. The reality is that a gun is the great equalizer that makes an 85 pound senior woman as formidable as the 350 pound gym rat. I have always thought that the extensive coverage by the media of a shooting only encourages more. They should NEVER identify the shooter by name, thus giving them their wish for attention and infamy. Let them be described as “a 22 year old mentally disturbed shooter” period. No recognition beyond that they were sick in the head.
Most people with a gun have no evil intent. The following quotations by Florida Sheriffs as found on the Wednesday Coconut Telegraph make good sense to me:

[Quotes from Florida police] “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey in a video posting on his agency’s Facebook page. “Like each of you, I’ve had enough of terrorists and others who decide they want to target U.S. citizens because they want to make a statement or get their 15 minutes of fame,” he said. “Now, more than ever before, is the time for law enforcement and citizens to be fully prepared for an attack or an active shooter scenario with the right tools to eliminate or at least disrupt the attack.” He urged those who are licensed to carry concealed firearms to have their guns with them at all times. “You are the first line of defense,” he said, “for you, your family and others around you.” Those who aren’t licensed to carry a concealed firearm should take the class and get certified, he said.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd echoed Ivey’s sentiments. “I can tell you the probability of needing a firearm is remote,” Judd said Thursday afternoon, “but it’s more important to have a gun in your hand than a cop on the phone.” He said those who are comfortable with guns — and can appropriately handle a firearm — should get a gun permit and carry a gun with them. Judd said mass killers typically take two to four minutes to carry out their plans, while the average time of response of law enforcement is more than five minutes. “We know that we may get there to mitigate a piece of it, but we will never be there in time to prevent it,” Judd said. “So that means until we arrive, we need the help of the good citizens of the community to protect themselves and to protect others.”

  2. Alex, This whole subject is very draining. A few days ago I had a Scottish lady in my cab who lives here. She simply can’t believe the attitude here with regard to guns. She can’t get a hold on it. She is typical of anyone outside this country. It is inconceivable for them. OK, one more attempt to answer all the cliches, and Halloween has gone thru them all. The only good guy with a gun should be a professional law enforcement person. What people like Halloween are describing is a failed state, like Somalia. If the gun people do get to the point where they get all they want, the US will have become a failed state, lacking the rule of law, which is the hallmark of a functioning state. I hope we never get there, and think we are sophisticated enough to not go there, but things are getting worse not better. The gun people prove that. Sometimes I look down my street at Don’s Bar and think, just imagine if all those drunks had a gun, or I think of the Oriole Club and wonder how many gun fights there’d be there over women, drugs, etc. Woo! Thanks Alex

  3. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/scotland-assault-capital-world-according-6391138

SCOTLAND is the assault capital of the world according to new United Nations statistics.

The shocking data shows that we are more likely to be the victims of a physical attack than any other country.

Scotland fared worse than notorious crime hotspots such as Mexico, Colombia and El Salvador.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes report claimed Scotland is the world leading location for attacks resulting in “serious bodily injury”.

Nearly 1,200 people per 100,000 were assaulted in 2013.

The figure is more than double the rate in England and seven times the average for the rest of the world combined.

The UN research looked at more than 80 countries including rich and poor nations in North and South America, Africa and Asia.

    1. sister the gun-grabbers would be in full wet tissue if ever confronted by a serious attacker and would be the first to cower behind a defender with a gun whoever it may be. they can’t tell me they would call for police protection in a fire fight and ask the defender to cease and desist because the ‘cops are on the way’ as the attacker shoots their brains out! the liberal progressive talking points on this ‘gun ownership’ issue holds nothing rational in their thought other then irrational warm and fuzzy feel good fluff without substance.
and since our good friend jerry is so worried about a ‘failed state’ due to the ‘rule of law’ being abandoned i say jerry ‘WAKE UP’….we have that now….just look at the past many years of laws ignored and broken by the leadership of our country and our constitution shredded before our very eyes.
no jerry I PREFER THE MEANS OF PROTECTING MYSELF AND FAMILY but the progressive marxist prefers to strip me of that right of self defense and refuses to mind their own business perpetually meddling in other people’s lives.

      1. It’s all about feelings, Wank: You folks feel the need for guns. We folks don’t feel a need for guns.

33,000 + gun deaths per year, vs many fewer, depending on what adjustments were passed and enforced countrywide.

I would prefer a few sensible restrictions and a period of time to see if they are improving the situation. Then, adjustments where needed. Nuances!

Note: Many complaints are made that our laws, [of all kinds], are not being enforced.
I would blame that on Grover Norquist and his “bathtub drowning” fetish.

I’m curious. Do you own any military style, auto or semi-auto rifles and any clips larger than 10 capacity?

        pip

  4. We’re short on facts here, Sister. What constitutes those Scottish ‘assaults’. Men assaulting women? Or, men in fist fights, where arming them might mean gunfights? Who is assaulting who? How and why? I cannot help but notice a lack of information and nuance from the ‘pro-gun’ folks – [not that all of us ‘anti-gun’ folk aren’t guilty of some cherry-picking too.]

Notes: I own two old guns, unassembled .22 and 16 gauge, which haven’t seen the light of day in decades.

My oldest brother, now late, using his .32 revolver, shot and killed his wife 37 years ago, after he had gone all funda-mental-ist, [accent on the mental], while she was maybe an early feminist.

Back in my pool-shooting, beer-drinking days, [my 20s], I saw plenty of bar fights, [participated in three], all broken up before any real damage was done, no shooting
involved – [no one was armed].

There are nuances in the above.

    pip

    1. Sorry to hear about your brother and sister in law, Pip. Seems CIA agent Gloria Steinem got exactly what she was hoping for with her feminist movement…the breakup of the family.

Not sure of the answers to your questions about Scottland, just as I am not sure of the exact numbers of crimes that are stopped by gun owners in the US each year, although estimates are between 500,000 and 3 million.

I appreciate halloween’s response, makes perfect sense to me. And although I am not yet brave enough to carry a weapon I hope I don’t have to regret that decision.

      1. Congrats Sis, on champion level cherry picking of unsupported ‘data’ and in blithe unawareness of your own prejudiced motivations. The latter from my ‘generous to you’ conclusion, *if you realized the roots of what you’re saying, you’d never say what you’re saying*.

I gotta ask, have you ever introspected even just a little bit?

oh well, Happy Holidays – pip

        1. Pip, you’re welcome to contact the United Nations personally if you want the full break down on the who did what and how, to cause Scottland to be on the top of the list for most violent nations.

I introspect and check my bias all the time. If I offended you, I apologize, although I know not what for.

A good Hogmanay to you Pip.

    2. Lawrence, Thanks for that comment. I have traveled far and wide in Europe and was married at one time to an English girl. I know the British Isles. Compared to America, the paranoia with regard to just living your life is microscopic. It is a much LESS VIOLENT place than our bastion of freedom and liberty. The same goes for just about any place in western Europe. I’ve been in London’s, Milan’s, Madrid’s, Barcelona’s, Glasgow’s, on and on, worst neighborhoods without feeling unsafe. If there are sociological factors pertaining to our past history that cause this, than more discretion with gun accessibility is even more important. As for Scotland, yes, there are a lot of tough blokes there, but they do not have guns. If they did … ciao, Jerome

  5. sister ever so true. the ruling class attitude is ‘above’ the law and can be seen in their activity by looking at the lies and deceptions of the Marxist sponge hillery and not to leave out the obomma of course who should have been impeached ages ago….then again the congress critters act above the law too playing in their daily soap opera! this nation is truly out of control and barreling towards that progressive totalitarian marxist regime headed by the banksters and their minions called the ‘new world order’. a terribly disgusting nation we offer to our grandchildren with pop-tart school violations and ‘free speech’ zones too!

  6. I would like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow Blue Paper commenters, contributors, and the excellent editors, all a safe and happy holiday. Sister, Wankajm, Mr. Piper, Mr. Symington, Mr. Donnelly, Mr. Grapel, Mr. Boettger, and the Girards, you all have my warmest regards and I look forward to more excellent debate and journalism in the upcoming year.

    Keysbum (Dave)

    1. Happy and Healthy Holiday to you Keysbum.

I have one wish this holiday season…that Arnaud will be inspired to share some more or his brilliant illustrations with us in the coming year.

      Merry Christmas All.

  7. Here’s a stat. More Americans Have Been Shot to Death in the Last 25 Years Than Have Died in Every War Since 1776. 656,397 American war casualties since America’s inception as a nation. 836,290 have died from gun shot in America just since 1989. To compare gun deaths to deaths from other means such as hospitals, drugs, automobile, etc. is disingenuous in the extreme and classic gun fetishist twisted logic. Over time measures have been introduced to lessen those deaths by hospitals, drugs and automobile and those efforts continue. If there was a way to lessen those deaths by hospitals, drugs, automobile, etc, even more, we would happily do it. The same logic should apply to gun deaths.

  8. pip I disagree. its about self protection…a very practical solution to saving ones ass from the mad hatter ravings and actions of a maniac that’s out to kill you.
about your 33,000 there are 195,000 medical mistake deaths….lets ban doctors then is your logic!
no the whole trend of the progressive is an ultimate ban on ownership. i’ll take the constitutional alternate or should I say the god given right.
    as to your question:

“I’m curious. Do you own any military style, auto or semi-auto rifles and any clips larger than 10 capacity?”

your question goes to show again the irrelevancy of what the weapon ‘looks’ like in ‘military style’ contrasted to its function. as I said earlier all rifles are single shot per trigger pull unless of course auto which are banned from the public without a special license. and as for the ‘clip’ [I’m sure you mean magazine] capacity as your political promoter hillery of liberal progressive Marxist causes would say…’what difference does it make’? yes what difference indeed….in a hand gun of a 15 cap/mag need I reload 3 times and add 1-2 seconds or 2 times and save the 1-2 seconds….its irrelevant! as irrelevant as the high capacity ban on mags of 15. all warm and fuzzy feel good bullshit in a word whittling away little by little at 2nd amendment rights all directed to an ultimate ban on guns in the hands of the public…..for our collective protection of course!!!
    best of cheers wjm

    1. Wank, I truly feel sorry for you in your fear of ‘the other’. Perhaps in the new year you’d consider using your Obama-care and getting some help?

Of course, if you’re spending most of your time among other ‘good guys with guns’ maybe your fears are not so unreasonable. Maybe all you need to do is get out and make some new less paranoid friends.

      anyway, Havanice Christmas – pip

        1. The trouble is, Wank, you really don’t seem to have a point. You have a couple of ‘straw men’ I chose to ignore.

I’m left with two more questions:
          – Where do you live that is so dangerous?
          …or…
          – What is it you’ve done in your past dealings that you feel you would have so many people ‘who are out to kill you’?
          …one more…
How many times have you felt in so much danger you’ve had to reach for your weapon?

Sincerely, I would bet that if you can’t give me a valid answer to the above questions, your bogeymen are actually ‘black swans’ built up out of a faulty evaluation of reality, too much Fox and Limbaugh, et al.

          pip

  9. Keysbum,

Right back at you…The best in all things…

To “The Blue Paper Extended Family”, friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances; along with those not finding favor with me, I send ‘peace & good will’.

    Blessings & Respect To All….

The sentiments of the following ‘gun nuts’ bear repeating:

“Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest.”
    – Mahatma Gandhi

“But if someone has a gun and is trying to kill you … it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.”
    – Dalai Lama

“…the right to defend one’s home and one’s person when attacked has been guaranteed through the ages by common law.”
    – Martin Luther King

“A sword never kills anybody; it is a tool in the killer’s hand.”
    – Lucius Annaeus Seneca

“A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity.”
    – Sigmund Freud

  10. pippy the point is the constitution prohibits as does individualism….or don’t you see the connecting of dots? as in all them progressive ideas like gun shaped pop-tarts and free speech zones. oh well I guess I’m just not smart and intelligent like you progressives who are out to save me from my dumb and inferior paranoid self! last BAH!

  11. John, Really, Xmas is a heavy burden for me, rather than express my feelings for you and yours having the best holidays possible, I’d rather just say that I feel that everyday for everyone, and sometimes think Xmas is a way to balance the ill feelings our culture generates on a daily basis. Anyhoo, John, Ghandi is talking about a conquering power subduing a technologically inferior culture. Seriously, the idea of of guns saving this situation for the colonized people is an impossible historical reality, not relevant to the gun controversy here. In our case we are talking about the rule of law in a country we are all equals in. Now, I know almost all of us who communicate here often don’t trust the government to be the best it can, nor to even be motivated to do the best it can for the most of us. When that lack of trust reaches a breaking point (and we are nowhere near that point because our country still functions with some degree of effectiveness) then we will have a “revolution”, which will have nothing to do with private citizens over throwing the gov’t with private guns. I wish you the same good cheer I wish you every day of the year, ciao, Jerome
