BIG PINE KEY – The Florida Keys SPCA is hosting a free screwworm screening for pets.

Veterinarians Nelly Amador-Jehn and Joe Fisch with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and local veterinarians Doug Mader and Gerry Diethelm will conduct the screenings. They take just a few minutes to complete.

If an infestation is found, pet owners will be directed to immediately see their veterinarian for treatment. Pets are 100 percent treatable if the infestation is detected early.

If you suspect your pet has screwworms, don’t wait for the screening. See your veterinarian immediately. Screwworms also are painful.

The veterinarians also are available to answer questions about screwworms and how to protect your pets.

A table also will be setup next to the screening to provide information about the screwworm infestation and the aggressive eradication response that is underway on Big Pine and No Name keys.

The screening is taking place in the Winn-Dixie parking lot. Look for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Mobile Command Post.

For questions, contact the Florida Keys SPCA Marathon campus at 305-743-4800.
