Key West lived up to runners’ expectations on Sunday, Jan. 18th, providing beautiful, balmy weather to underscore its being called “One of 14 Best Destination Half Marathons”. Athletes in the races were treated to a scenic course through Old Town and a gorgeous view of the Atlantic.

“This is the perfect excuse to come to Key West to get rid of the dark, cold winter blahs,” said Barbara Wright, race founder and organizer. “We offer a walk in both races, too, so there’s something for every ability level. We’re also very happy to see a lot of returning runners. It seems like the Key West Half Marathon is fast becoming an annual tradition.”

Participants this year traveled from countries far beyond the U.S. — from Europe to the Caribbean and South America. Top finishers were: Overall Male: 1. Byron Adams, 51, (New Orleans), 1:22:13; 2. Jeremy Scheid, 26, (Sparta), 1:24:41; 3. Daniil Blinov, 34, (New York), 1:25:30. Overall Female: 1. Kim Pawalek-Brantly, 40, (St. Augustine), 1:25:17; 2. Michelle Andres, 38, (East Gull Lake), 1:30:07; 3. Lorraine Levitsky, 41, (Charleston), 1:32:18. Additionally, awards were given to top finishers in other categories, such as Masters, Military, and Hand Crank racers. Finisher medals were given in both races — unique wine toppers to those in the Half Marathon and dog tag medals to those in the 5K.

Along the course, Barry Cuda and other local entertainers treated all of the out-of-state visitors with local color, including live music.

While at the post-party, racers could relax to the island sounds of Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 band. Plus awards, raffles, and drink specials at Half Shell Raw Bar all made for a lively finish to a fantastic morning. Local charities benefit, as well. Part of the proceeds go to Key West Sunrise Rotary Scholarship Fund, Florida Keys Community College Youth Swim Program, A Positive Step of Monroe County, Zonta of Key West, and Womankind.
