CLASSICAL JAM TO PERFORM AT SAN CARLOS INSTITUTE

Classical Jam
                                                                           Classical Jam

New York based Classical Jam brings their polished, imaginative ensemble sound to San Carlos Institute on January 25th at 4:00 pm. Presented by the venerable Impromptu Classical Concerts, Classical Jam includes Chern Hwei Fung, violin; Katie Kresek, viola; Marco Granados, flute; Wendy Law, cello; and Justin Hines, percussion. In addition to ensemble work, each is sought-after soloist, as well as instructor.

Classical Jam will present an ambitious program featuring compositions by Astor Piazzolla (whose work is enjoying a much-deserved revival), J.S. Bach, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Phillip Glass. In addition, the musicians have contributed original pieces: Samai’i Shira by percussionist Justin Hines who has spent considerable time in Japan, and Hibiee-Jibiees by flute player Marco Granados.

“Our Key West program features a unique new Bach set called Bach Reimagined.”, notes percussionist Justin Hines. “In this set, we combine the original written parts with new imaginations of those notes, like improvising an Irish gig over the Bach’s Gigue form the Cello Suites. Or taking the Art of Fugue and reinterpreting Bach’s dotted rhythms as the basis for a slow blues swing section that we jam over in the blues style.”

Also on this program is the hauntingly beautiful Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 by Villa -Lobos, his own blending of Bach’s contrapuntal music with his own native Brazilian style of composition. This piece was strongly associated with the young soprano Joan Baez who performed Villa-Lobos in her early concerts.

“This is our second visit to Key West”, continues Hines, “and we are looking forward to playing again for one of the warmest and most welcoming audiences we’ve ever played for.” And, yes, Key West’s weather is not without appeal. “Who wouldn’t be excited to visit Key West–especially in the middle of a freezing New York City winter!”

Impromptu Classical Concerts also announces the February 1st performance by Alexander String Quartet at St. Paul’s Church, a replacement for the January 4th concert which was cancelled due to illness. All donors and subscribers can use their Flexipass for this and all other 2015 series concerts.
