by Naja and Arnaud Girard……. FDLE reprimanded Special Agent Kathy Smith with a 5-day suspension. Agent Smith was accused of having intentionally signed a false affidavit in order to secure a $461,000 bank loan. Agent Smith became engulfed in controversy in 2014 while leading the investigation of the in-custody-death of 61-year old tourist, Charles Eimers. According to her critics, a serious conflict of interest had caused her to participate in a KWPD cover-up of Eimers’ death: Special Agent Kathy Smith was investigating officers who, on [continue reading…]

Mystery Writers, Street Crime, and Mosquitos: Framing Crime--A Three-Part Series

by Martha K. Huggins, Ph.D. ……. Some Mysteries of Murder Mysteries Now that Key West’s “Mystery Writers Fest” has ended I want to talk about mystery novels, “street” crime, and its oft-ignored cousin, ‘white-collar’ corporate and government crime. As a mystery novel junkie, I was shaped in my teens by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s, Sherlock Holmes, an emotionless scientific positivist crime solver. As an adult, I shifted seamlessly to Patricia Cornwell’s central character, Dr. Kay Scarpetta–a modern Forensist who appealed to my academic scientific bent. [continue reading…]

Scientific Clues Connect the Deep Reefs of Pulley Ridge to Florida Keys

This week, a team of university, state, and federal scientists is exploring a little known deep reef, Pulley Ridge, where spectacular plate coral colonies blanket the seafloor and red groupers actually help create habitat. Scientists believe this ecosystem, which lies 33 miles northwest of the western most boundary of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, serves as a source of invertebrate and fish larvae riding the Loop Current’s easterly and southward curvature from Florida’s coast to the sanctuary. The deepest known photosynthetic coral reef off [continue reading…]

Once Upon A Time - A Light Was In The World...

by John Donnelly……. The ‘American Press’ was adjudicated specific constitutional rights by the founders of this nation. It was hoped that as the ‘Fourth Estate’ they would rigorously expose the institutional excesses that are systemic within the corruptive influences of a powerful government. The architects of this new nation knew that politicians would be insulated from the citizenry once elected to the positions they coveted. Their authority and privilege would shield them from the consequences associated with misdeeds and violations accrued while in office, as [continue reading…]

Getting Involved

by Kirby Congdon……. In considering poetry, definitions becomes obscure. Each person’s imagination has its own references. It is difficult to appeal to every reader. One has to refer to whatever one knows or has experienced himself. Yet it is essential to commit oneself to all that and, so, avoid pat answers, convenient references or cliches. But it is also difficult to seek out what may be a kind of revelation. We start out easily enough with a handy inspiration but how do we stay there, [continue reading…]

Thick as a Brick, or Why America Loves Donald Trump

by Kim Pederson……. On this day (August 22) in 1880, George Joseph Herriman was born in New Orleans. George grew up to be a cartoonist. Among other strips, he created the iconic cartoon Krazy Kat in 1913 and continued drawing it until his death in 1944. It’s iconic because, as Wikipedia describes, its “mixture of offbeat surrealism, innocent playfulness and poetic, idiosyncratic language has made it a favorite of comics aficionados and art critics for more than 80 years.” Here’s a sample from one strip: [continue reading…]
