Cudjoe Deep Injection Well Funded But Shallow Well Battle Continues

by JD Adler… March 5, 2015: A team of environmental scientists led by Dr. Briceno of the Florida International University have gathered under blue skies on Cudjoe Key. Their mission: to determine whether the shallow injection wells installed for use in the Cudjoe regional wastewater treatment plant will successfully contain wastewater or whether the ground will prove too porous allowing partially treated sewage to migrate to nearby national marine sanctuary surface waters. By March 19th they would have already found the answer, as described in the report released April 11. “We [continue reading…]

Op/Ed: If No One is Accountable...

by JD Adler… Recently, it became headline news that Rolling Stone magazine’s expose about rape on a college campus was factually inaccurate in almost every way. It turns out Rolling Stone had and their reporter had made no efforts to confirm the “victim’s” story by talking to witnesses or the accused. In the end, the publisher decided not to fire anyone, saying that the humiliation of public exposure was punishment enough. This highlights a problem that exists throughout American culture; a complete lack of accountability [continue reading…]

Cudjoe Shallow Wells Need Deeper Look

by JD Adler… Environmental attorneys Caron Balkany and Christopher Byrd have issued a 60 day notice of intent to sue the government on behalf of local fisherman Mike Laudicina, due to failure to acquire proper review for the shallow well injection of municipal sewage in the Cudjoe Key area. They have issued a press release stating that Monroe County and the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority (FKAA) have utilized a “fake” environmental assessment report to support their contention that this method is safe. Fantasy Financing Part 2

by JD Adler….. March 3, 2015, the City Commission of Key West met for five (5) hours. First on their agenda was a presentation by the Tourist Development Association and the Market Share Company in response to recent public concerns which did not allow any questions or comments to be heard from the public. The Commissioners themselves were able to discuss the topic, though this discussion primarily involved members of the local government, elected or employed, as the presenters were only able to reiterate points [continue reading…]

ec-Key-nomics

by JD Adler Spend 5 minutes in Key West and you will learn that there are significant economic issues plaguing the community. A handful of people own most of the businesses and/or property while the workforce struggles to find housing they can afford. This is an issue continuously debated, with little progress made. In fact the situation appears to grow worse over time. Recently, members of the local government have begun to take a more active role in attempting to alter the situation. They voted [continue reading…]

Fantasy Financing

by JD Adler…… As pressure continues to mount on the Key West City Commission to find a way to reform Fantasy Fest, the details of its operations start to come under greater scrutiny. Included under the looking glass are its marketing decisions, the relationship with The Bahama Village Goombay Festival, and general financing. The Key West Friends of Fantasy Fest have been taking the lead on critiques of the marketing of Fantasy Fest; requesting an approach more focused on creative costuming rather than an “adult [continue reading…]

Ego-Terrorism

by JD Adler… Leaders of Ego In the face of recent terror attacks in France, Pakistan, Libya and Nigeria, the fall of the Yemeni government, a thwarted attack in Belgium, continuous drone strikes in the Middle East and Africa, Russian incursions into the Ukraine and the never ending cycle of Israel/Palestine; one has to wonder about the people ordering all of this bloodshed. Cannabis Freedom Riders Arrive in Key West

by JD Adler Cannabis Freedom Riders, USA On a cool, cloudy, January 16, I caught up with the Cannabis Freedom Riders, USA as they pulled into Boyd’s Camp Ground on Stock Island. This was not their first ride across Florida, or even America for that matter. They’ve crossed 24 states since 2006 promoting their mission, some multiple times; including Florida in support of the referendum on Amendment 2 in 2014. After the long bicycle ride from Tallahassee; Kenneth and Shirley Locke, their 4 kids, and their [continue reading…]

Cuba Abierto

by JD Adler After confirmation of the release of 53 political prisoners earlier this week, the US  Department of Treasury, Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) published official amendments to its Cuban regulations today. This publication, in turn, arrives just one week prior to the Assistant Secretary of State heading to Havana to discuss potentially re-opening the US embassy there. For airlines, travel agents, telecom companies, banks and Cuban citizens, these changes are tremendously beneficial. For anyone else, little has changed.  The White House is [continue reading…]

What The Fest?

by JD Adler Fantasy Fest Since 1979, Key West has hosted an annual bacchanal called Fantasy Fest.  Initiated as an attempt to draw tourists, it has by that measure been wildly successful. Tourists and locals alike revel in the opportunity for open celebration every year. Vendors and the marketers rake in significant stacks of cash.  It also has its detractors, and every few years the calls for reform rise to a crescendo. Another tide of reform appears to be rising this year. This last successfully [continue reading…]

What is Normal Anyway?

by JD Adler Recently I was sitting in a local restaurant, with the editorial board of KWTN, when one of our breakfast neighbors suggested an article about how Key West culture has gone so far afield there is no sense of “normal” anymore. Then he went on to list a series of anecdotes that he found upsetting primarily because they were dismissed by people as, “that’s just Key West,” without consequence for their actions.

Inside Sector Key West

USCG Sector Key West On a 70 degree, blue sky, December day in Key West, I found myself on the west end of the island, outside the guarded, metal gates of the United States Coast Guard Group, Sector Key West. A young, round male in wrinkled blues, held the gate house secure against the food delivery guy and me. On the nose of 1 PM, my escort arrived. Lt. j.g. Peter Bermont, the USCG’s spokesperson in Key West, and my affable government handler for this [continue reading…]

An End To Fantasy Fest?

by JD Adler The Bethel Commission Gathered in the Commissioners’ Chamber of the Old City Hall, on November 17, 2014, former City Commissioner Harry Bethel brought together State Attorney Catherine Vogel, Police Chief Donie Lee, and approximately 50 concerned citizens of Key West to discuss the future of Fantasy Fest at a meeting labeled “Key West, Our Island Life”.
